Description: Innovative programme to meet the needs of beginners and advanced practitioners. The CACU offer a fantastic opportunity to meet and greet expert sonographers in a small interactive group. You will have a true VIP experience on the front seat where you will be able to improve your skills during the hands-on sessions and to test your knowledge during the interactive cases with voting. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come first serve basis.

Background: Point-of-care ultrasound has become increasingly integrated into the practice of intensive care across with several accreditation programmes being developed by leading professional organisation and societies (ICS UK, CUSIC, SCCM, ESICM courses, Dutch ICS, ICARUS, WinFocus, HandsOnEcho and CACU in Belgium etc). This course incorporates aspects of all these programmes into a one-day innovative, modular course.

Learning objective:

  • Gain a foundation in the ultrasound skills needed for Intensive Care
  • Interact with expert colleagues in the spirit of collaboration and shared learning
  • Lectures and practical experience in:
    • Transthoracic echocardiography and FATE
    • Lung US and BLUE
    • Abdominal US and FAST
    • Vascular US 
  • Ultrasound in shock and as a guide to fluid resuscitation and SESAME
  • Hands-on sessions with phantoms for vascular access and transesophageal echocardiography (advanced)
  • Interactive cases and voting

Course Details:

Delegates – maximum 3 per group. Therefore maximum number of delegates = 3 * 8 = 24

Practical stations – 3 * 20 minutes rotation handson + 20 minutes (interactive session)
Total scan time – 3hr 40 mins

6 cardiac ultrasound stations
1 interactive sessions (2 groups combined)
20 minutes each rotation (4 rotations)

Practical Session 2 (80 minutes)
6 lung ultrasound stations
1 interactive sessions (2 groups combined)
20 minutes each rotation (4 rotations)

Practical Session 3 (60 minutes)

• Abdominal (2 stations)
• Lung/Echo (3 stations)
