CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE IN FLUID STEWARDSHIP or short CEFS
Becoming a Centre of Excellence in Fluid Stewardship (CEFS)
A Centre of Excellence in Fluid Stewardship (CEFS) is a hospital or healthcare institution (within a local IFA chapter) that distinguishes itself by adhering to best practices, promoting education, and implementing systems to achieve exceptional care in fluid management and stewardship.
The first step is identification of a hospital as CEFS
• Member of local chapter
The hospital must have an established connection with the local chapter, preferably through one or more members of the chapter’s core leadership team.
• Formation of core fluid team in the hospital:
The hospital must establish a multidisciplinary team responsible for leading fluid stewardship initiatives:
- Doctors (minimum 2, from different specialties such as critical care, emergency department, operating room, surgery, or internal medicine)
- Pharmacist (1)
- Nurse (1–2, ideally from critical care or perioperative settings)
- Dietician (1, focusing on nutritional fluid requirements)
• Team Certification
The entire core team must complete The Basic Fluid Champion Course so that each individual HCP obtains the Fluid Champion badge and certificate.
• Team participates at IFADmini
The core team must attend at least one IFADmini event and participate and pass as a team to gain further insights and engage with the global IFA community.
• Financial support
The core team should obtain buy-in and financial support from the hospital management team to initiate application (this may be via external funding).
