Assessing immunological abnormalities in COVID-19 disease may inform patient care

Better understanding of COVID-19

A growing list of publications indicate that the assessment of lymphocyte subset counts may provide prognostic information for COVID-19 disease severity and convalescence when considered in conjunction with other clinical information.

A meta-analysis of 20 peer-reviewed publications showed that CD4+ and CD8 T cell, CD8+ T cell, B cell, NK cell, and total lymphocyte cell counts are statistically significant reduced in patients with severe/critical COVID-19 disease compared to mild or  moderate disease1.

A complete blood count (CBC) test captures lymphopenia in the blood but is unable to elucidate which specific lymphocyte populations are reduced and impacting the ability for normal immune response.

Lymphocyte subset counts (such as CD4 and CD8 T cells) can give more insight into immunological abnormalities and the dysfunctional immune system during COVID-192,3

Because individuals with COVID-19 typically exhibit a prominent decrease of CD4 and/or CD8 lymphocyte count with increasing disease severity, knowing accurate counts of T-cell subsets can be critical to informing your course of action.
