Intravenous (IV) fluid therapy plays a fundamental role in the management of hospitalized patients and correct use of IV fluids can be lifesaving.1,2,3

Baxter understands that although IV fluid administration is one of the most common interventions in acute care it can be frequently mismanaged.4

To support the ongoing education related to fluid stewardship and help implement change, Baxter has supported the following educational activities which cover a variety of topics.

Satellite Masterclass session 4  English Track

Speakers: Dr Ben Creagh-Brown – Consultant Physician and Clinical Academic Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Royal Surrey County Hospital UK and Dr Justin Kirk-Bayley – Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthesia, Royal Surrey County Hospital UK.

Summary: This symposium will focus on the use of haemodynamic monitoring and the appropriate prescribing of IV fluids for fluid resuscitation of septic patients outside of the ICU.

Speakers: Dr Emma Vaux, Medical Associate Director, Patient safety and Consultant Nephrologist, Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust – UK

Summary: This lecture focuses on the processes taken within a hospital in the UK to change the habits of a prescriber in relation to IV fluids in line with the NICE guidance.  Dr Vaux will highlight key steps taken, using a system engineering approach to IV prescribing, including EPR, e-prescribing and E-fluid balance charts to achieve prescribing in line with national guidance. You will learn about the changes that were made, how they were made and the results of making these changes in clinical practice.

Speakers: Mr Alistair Grey, Chief Pharmacy Information Officer, East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust – UK

Summary: This lecture focuses on the role of the Pharmacist in supporting and influencing changes in fluid stewardship. You will learn about the importance and benefit of having a pharmacist involved in Fluid Stewardship, having a multi-disciplinary fluid Stewardship Committee and insights into prescribing charts and ongoing education to embed change in prescribing practice.

Speakers: Assist. Professor Andre Holder, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical care and Sleep medicine, Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta – USA

Summary: This lecture focuses on the evidence for fluid management; what is fluid responsiveness? When, how, and why it should be measured? Prof Holder reviews some of the evidence behind the use of dynamic assessments over static measurements, along with the most robust way to assess fluid responsiveness. He will then present a protocolised approach to fluid responsiveness and the effects on outcome.
